Information about BARI Centrally situated on the Adriatic Sea, Bari is also the capital and commercial center of the Puglia (or Apulia) Region, which forms the heel of Italy's boot. Bari is divided into a logical modern city, built during the early 19th century, and a medieval old town. The old town was designed like a labyrinthe, intended to shield residents from ocean winds, and to confuse invaders who coveted Bari as a strategic port. Prominent local landmarks include the Basilica of St. Nicola (Old Nick being Bari's patron saint), a cathedral, and a Norman-Swebian Castle. In 1707, the Aragonese were defeated by the Austrians and Bari saw a period of recovery, characterized by a flourishing commercial market through the sea and trade over the water. Then came the Bourbons, and the city continued to recover; during the 17th century links with Naples were very strong, there are documents and manufactured goods “manufatti” which record this period. In 1860, the city was unified with the rest of the kingdom of Italy. At the end of the 19th century the urban configuration changed notably: at the same time as the industrial development and the increase of the population, the urban center also developed stretching far beyond what is today known as the center, exceeding the limits signaled by the “extramurale” street (the street that went beyond what were once the city walls) Today the city is the most progressive in comparison with to the other areas of the South, more active and commercially competitive.
